THE GROWING RENT PROBLEM ON NORTH DAKOTA’S DOORSTEP.

The pandemic had a devastating impact on North Dakotan’s housing communities across the state. Renters who lost their jobs due to company cutbacks and closings struggled to pay their rent and utilities. This struggle affected many small and mid-sized housing providers who didn’t receive the rent owed to them. With the situation quickly turning dire, it was clear that people needed help.

The North Dakota Department of Human Services stepped in with federal funding to assist renters with their rent and utility payments. We partnered with the state to raise awareness and let renters and housing providers know that much-needed funding was available. The resulting campaign explained the program to the two groups involved with messaging tailored to each audience, and with urgency, encouraged both audiences to take action and apply for help.

With such a personal and sensitive topic, we embraced a very human and empathetic approach with our messaging to give our renter audience hope and a sense of relief that they were not alone.

HELPING PEOPLE BREATHE A SIGH OF RENT RELIEF.

Cover Image
Struggling to make rent causes emotional distress, so we created a campaign themed Breathe A Sigh Of Rent Relief to encourage both renters and housing providers to apply for assistance and start down the path to receiving financial help. To reach the right consumers more efficiently with our media budget, we used a place-based media marketing strategy. This included gas pump advertising to connect with cash-strapped renters feeling the pain of rising gas prices. In addition, we placed broadcast TV by leveraging a targeted holiday package on the Hallmark Channel. We also collaborated with partners across the state to ensure our message reached those in need – rural or urban, big or small.
